More commitment needed on golf tourism - Taylor
By Hallam Hope
A leading Caribbean hotelier is calling for more commitment by Caribbean governments and the various business sectors to develop golf tourism.
Ralph Taylor, a former President of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), said more golf courses were needed in Barbados and the wider region. He said golf tourism was an untapped sector with the potential to earn the Caribbean millions of dollars.
But he said facilities were needed, such as a driving range in Barbados and a diversity of courses, including public and private courses.
Taylor, Chairman of Almond Resorts Inc, called on Government and the private sector to support the efforts by the Barbados Golf Association (BGA) to establish a driving range. The absence of a driving range is regarded in golfing circles to be an impediment to the growth of youth golf. A driving range would also provide a supporting tourism facility for visiting golfers.
The BGA announced at the end of the recent Beacon Barbados Open that the Royal & Ancient, the world’s governing body for the sport, had approved a grant to help the association set up a driving range.
But Taylor, the guest speaker at the closing ceremony for the Open, said money was needed to both establish the facility and cover operational and other costs.
He said that with the availability of more public golfing facilities the sport should be introduced in schools as part of the curriculum.
Describing golf as a potential multi million dollar tourism earner Taylor said “real commitment” was needed to develop golf tourism in the Caribbean.
“The Government of Barbados and the private sector need to jump on board to develop Barbados as a golfing destination,” Taylor said.
