Skeete, Piggott shine in golf

After trailing on two days the Barbadian pair of Ricky Skeete and Robert Piggott pegged back Puerto Ricans Jesus Velez and Luis de la Haba to retain the Caribbean’s Seniors golf title by four shots.
The Bajans trailed by one stroke on the second day but opened a five-stroke lead on the penultimate day Friday with a better score of 70. Despite a horrid final day of 78 when the Puerto Ricans also struggled the third day performance was more than adequate to keep the Francis Steele Perkins trophy on Bajan shores.
Skeete, a former Barbados wicketkeeper-batsman and Piggott, once a dominant local golfer, put together better scores of 72, 70, 70 and 78 for 292 shots while the Puerto Ricans put together scores of 70, 73, 76 and 77 for 296.
The Dominican Republic pair of Tulio Luna and Manuel Ovalles finished third with 303 shots at the close of the four-day tournament Saturday.
Barbados were fourth in the Hoerman Cup behind winners the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico.
The team of Carlsen Leacock, Sean Edey, Judd Cozier, Julian Jordan and Scott Foster had 1208 shots in a championship where the four best scores count to finish fourth.
Although they missed James Johnson, who is recovering from a vehicle injury, there were a few promising scores. Julian Jordan showed some promise on the closing two days with scores of 72 and 73, Sean Edey shot 72 on the penultimate day Friday and Carlsen Leacock opened Wednesday with 73.
Despite the at times challenging conditions the Dominican Republic replied with 1194 shots to win by 11 strokes from Trinidad and Tobago. Puerto Rico were third, one shot behind the Trinidadians with 1205 shots.
In the Mid Amateurs championship the Barbadian team of Orville Alleyne and Tony Prescod fought back to be fourth. After two disappointing days Alleyne and Prescod finished with 296 shots, one short of Jamaica. The Dominican Republic’s team of Juan Campusano and Miguel Feris stole the show with 279 shots, 13 better than Trinidad and Tobago.
Jamaica were third with 295 shots, one fewer than the Barbadians Alleyne and Prescod who shot 75, 78, 73 and 70.
Barbados did not field teams for the Women’s and Super Seniors’ championships.
