Proverbs wins RBTT golf

By Hallam Hope

Simon Proverbs sunk a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the two-day RBTT Bank golf Classic by a thrilling one shot at Durrants Sunday.
The 15 year-old 2008 Hoerman Cup debutant trailed veteran Carlsen Leacock by four strokes after the opening round Saturday at the Barbados Golf Club course.

His one-stroke win in the most challenging event after the annual Beacon Insurance Barbados Open completed an outstanding year of success, which also saw him finish second in his age group in the Caribbean junior championships in Trinidad and Tobago.
“I played well over the two days,” Proverbs said. “It was a very tight tournament but the pressure was enjoyable,” he added.

Proverbs shot 74 on both days to win the top junior prize, the overall prize as well as the Men’s Championship Flight.
Helen Foster, the long-standing Barbados representative, won the women’s event with a Gross 164, one shot better than Lynn deCambra McCleod and teenager Mary Ince.
John Phillips won the Men’s First Flight with 167, taking it on the countback from Jonathan Layne and Bruce Ward, third with 169.

Terry Hanton was the Senior Men’s winner with 152.
The Men’s Stableford event was won by Mike Evelyn with 86 points while CBC videographer Winston “Mailer” Morris was a game runner-up with 81 points. Monica Gonsalves won the women’s Stableford event with 69 points. In the men’s Championship Flight Shane Chesney won the Nett prize with 145, winning on the countback from the consistent Glyne Skeete.

Bruce Ward with 143 won the Net prize in the men’s First Flight while Kirk Odl (147) was second. Mary Ince won the women’s Nett prize and Peter Lloyd, the Senior Men’s Nett prize, both scoring 151.
Country Manager of RBTT Bank Horace Cobham thanked the players for taking part in the event and said he was extremely pleased with the performances of the junior players. He expressed a desire to see the Classic develop into a bigger and better tournament in 2009.

Junior players held four of the top seven places in the Men’s Championship Flight. In addition to Simon Proverbs, Warren Bynoe was third (156), Dane DaSilva fourth (157) and David Leacock seventh (162). Mary Ince also won the women’s championship Nett prize.
