The island’s top golfers , and several from overseas, will tussle for supremacy in the 2017 edition of the RBC/ Royal Bank Classic on November 25 and 26.
Rated as the second major on the Barbados Golf Association’s (BGA) calendar, this two-day tournament and also coincides with the Independence Games hosted by the Barbados Olympic Association.
More than 100 players , many of them simulating the national colours and dressed in yellow and blue, are expected on the greens and fairways at the Barbados Golf Club where the course is expected to be challenging over 36 holes.
During a media conference this week to launch the 13th RBC Classic, BGA President Trevor Tasker thanked the sponsors for their continued commitment to the Classic and revealed that through the assistance of joint sponsors RBC/ Royal Bank and Royal Fidelity, the tournament remains greatly anticipated and also significantly contributes to the development of the island’s junior players.
"From its inception in 2004, the Classic remains a must play for our golfers and in partnership with Royal Bank (Barbados) Ltd. and Royal Fidelty , the BGA has raised the bar for what we intend to offer and each year we have succeeded in delivering a competitive and well-organised event," said Tasker.
The BGA President further outlined that the partnership was a mutually rewarding one and it was also evident that RBC embraces the core values associated with golf, which are – integrity, honesty, responsibility and respect.
“Over the years , The Classic has set a tradition of producing exciting golf and we look forward to keen rivalry again this year. Together we share a wonderful vision for the growth of this tournament , which also includes initiatives for the juniors, " added Tasker.
Managing Director of Royal Bank Barbados, Robert DeSilva said Royal Bank had a rich golfing tradition, dating back almost 100 years, and they were proud to support the RBC Classic for the 13th consecutive year.
"Our sponsorship of the RBC Golf Classic is extremely important to us, since it is essential to give back to communities. We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities in which we operate and supporting youth development gives us the opportunity to support the next generation of golfers," added DeSilva.
Organisers revealed that again this year , the RBC High Performance Award will be presented to a junior golfer who has done well on and off the field of play.
Country Head for Royal Fidelity, Jillian Nunes said her company was happy to be associated with the RBC Classic for the fourth consecutive year and Royal Fidelity will be sponsoring 10 of nearest-to-pin prizes over the two days of competition.
She added that the sponsorship also supports the BGA's junior development programme and they were also proud to be part of such an initiative.
Tournament Director at the BGC, Mike Jackman said greens were currently being upgraded at the Durants Club but the course will certainly be in good shape and ready to offer a premium experience for golfers in the month-end Classic
