Dawn Bispham and Cardinal Burnett are having a Merry Christmas after winning the 2017 President's Putter at the Royal Westmoreland golf club on Sunday (Dec.10).
Playing among a field of 80 players, made up of 40 two-ball teams, the winners carded 62 over 18 holes to win the better-ball tournament which was the Barbados Golf Association's (BGA) annual year-ending competition.
National player Bispham steered the way for the champions with a number of crucial birdies that pushed them two strokes clear of second-placed finishers Horace Cobham and Eric Layne.
Cobham and Layne posted 64 and narrowly edged Tony Reid and Chris Ballard on the count-back system. Reid and Ballard also shot 64 but were adjudged third as they registered 33 strokes on the back nine, compared to 32 by their rivals.
The President's Putter featured a 12.30pm shot-gun start and attracted a competitive field on a bright and sunny day where the Westmoreland course offered considerable roll for good drives and friendly greens for those able to pick the correct lines.
Following competition on the fairways and greens, BGA President Trevor Tasker thanked all players, sponsors and management of the host course for their contribution to a successful tournament and for their support of golf throughout the year.
The Putter was the final of 12 tournaments organised by the BGA in 2017 and a similar number are planned for the coming year as the Association continually seek to raise funds for junior development programmes and to assist national teams in attending regional tournaments.
The President disclosed that Barbados will be sending teams to the Caribbean Junior Championships in Jamaica and the Seniors to the Cayman Islands in July next year.
The BGA calendar for 2018 will tee-off with the New Year Hamper at the Rockley Club on January 6.
