The CGA championships, to be contested in five divisions and expected to attract players from all nine territories, are being played at the PGA National Resort, Fazio Course, Palm Beach Gardens , Florida, from October 26-30. The course is a challenging and highly rated venue and is also the home to the Honda Classic, a PGA tour event.
Barbados is fielding teams in three divisions (two players each) of the better-ball team championships and long-serving national player Robert Piggott, who took a break from regional competition in recent years, is making a return and will partner former BGA President Birchmore Griffith , also an established national player, in the Super Seniors (over 60 years) division.
They will drive and putt for the Higgs and Higgs Trophy in this competitive catergory where Trinidadians Fabien Lee-Foon and Monty Chapman are defending champions and Bahamians Oswald Moore and Raymond Gibson were second last year.
Barbados will also be represented in the mid-amateurs division (over 35 years) , where James Johnson and Julian Jordan are defending the Ramon Baez-Romano trophy.
Johnson and Jordan combined to to win the division in the Dominican Republic last year after coming from five strokes down to stave-off the Dominican Republic team (gross 205) and win by two strokes (gross 203).
The Barbados squad also includes newcomer Ivan Codrington, who is partnering with Newton Daisley, earning his second national cap, to compete in the Senior Men’s Division (50 and over) and could put themselves in title range once they can devise the right plan for tackling the course.
Last year in Punta Cana, Daisley combined with Carlsen Leacock to finish second after leading the tournament at one stage. They were defeated by two strokes by Trinidadians Deryck Gonsalves and Rynold Deonath (gross 214), who also lifted the Francis Steele-Perkins Cup.
Teams from Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Barbados , Jamaica, Cayman Islands, US Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos are expected to contest the CGA Championships. (BB)
