Barbados player Simon Proverbs held his nerve and staved off his rivals to win the 2018 RBC Classic at the Barbados Golf Club on Sunday.
Proverbs, the 2012 champion, took a jump on the field on the first day (Saturday) with a two-over-par 74, and rode it all the way over the last 18 holes.
Driving well and putting well, Proverbs was two-shots ahead of Canada-based Stephen Layne going into the last day and three ahead of Dawn Bispham.
He shot 76 on Sunday for a 36-hole gross 150, which was three strokes better than Layne and Bispham, who both finished on 153.
Julia Stephenson emerged champion among the women, finishing with a gross 169 after posting 84 on Sunday. Second was Helen Foster who registered a two-day 171.
Among the senior men, Michael Haynes emerged winner with a gross 158 which was two strokes better than former West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, who shot 160.
Veteran Barbados player Robert Piggott, moving to the Super-Seniors in recent times, dominated that division as he posted an even-par 72 on Sunday and was a convincing winner with a gross 150.
Some 88 players contested The Classic in five divisions and several of the categories were highly competitive, particularly the Seniors and Super Seniors, where experience counts.
Some of the island’s best-known cricketers were among those contesting The Classic and they included former West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, current Barbados captain Shamarh Brooks, veteran Nolan Clarke and former West Indies Player and coach, Otis Gibson. (BGA)
