The team is well positioned to better last years overall performance in the Arthur Ziadie Trophy, - the best overall team counting all divisions in the tournament. This is the first year in a long time that Barbados fields a team in every division.
The Hoerman Cup - Men's first division.
Barbados top golfer and team Captain, James Johnson showed the way in an early start by posting a 74 (+2) and lay tied 2nd in this year competitive field. Julian Jordan is not far behind with a 76 (+4), and is currently tied 6th in the table. Other results are, Scott Stollmeyer, 80 (+8) T21, Roger Bastic, 81 (+9) T27 and Donald Leacock. 88 (+16) 36.
Best score of the day was Jonathan Newnham, Jamaica with 73 (+1).
The Barbados team is currently ranked 4th in the Hoerman Cup on +23, 6 behind the leader Puerto Rico.
The George Teale Memorial Trophy - Women's division.
It was not a good first day for our women golfers in the George Teale Memorial Trophy. Julia Stephennson and Leisa Munn-Blakely both posted a 92 (+20) and Lynn DeCambra-McLeod posted a 97 (+25). The team is firmly at the bottom of the table and it looks to be a battle against the Cayman Islands team to avoid last place in the division. The Cayman Islands are 5 shots clear.
Ramon Baez Trophy - Mid Amateur
Carlsen Leacock and Elvis Medford are the Barbados representatives in the Ramon Baez Trophy - Mid Amateur division playing as a two-ball better-ball format. The team had a slow start recording 13 pars and 3 bogies before the finishing on a high with 2 birdies on the last 2 holes scoring a 73 (+1) for the day. The team is tied 5th, 4 shots behind the leaders Dominican Republic.
Francis & Steele-Perkins Trophy - Seniors
Robert Piggot and Michael Haynes are looking to win the Francis & Steele-Perkins Trophy - Seniors Division. They recorded a very good first round with a 70 (-2) but it could have been so much better. The team started the round with an eagle on the no 1, par 5 hole followed up with two birdies on hole no 4 and 6 before they recorded an unfortunate triple bogey on the par 4 no 7 hole. They finished the round 1 under though and are in an excellent position, one stroke behind the leaders Cayman Islands to fight for the trophy.
Higgs & Higgs Trophy - Super Seniors
The team in the Higgs & Higgs Trophy - Super Seniors division, Cally Boyea and Bitchmore Griffith was looking very competitive after the first nine holes posting a 35 (E). A 46 (+9) on the back nine saw the team fall in the table though ending up at 8th, 4 shots clear of the bottom team the Cayman Islands. The team has every chance to advance in the table if they can find the golf game they had on the front nine.
The second day will continue today, Wednesday.
