Sagicor, with combined support from Sagicor Life and Sagicor General Insurance, have come onboard with the Barbados Golf Association to stage the 2016 championships which will be played at the Barbados Golf Club, Apes Hill and Royal Westmoreland.
It will be a major weekend for golf in Barbados and the region and more than 100 players from the Caribbean, England and North America are expected to compete in six divisions, in a tournament that has come to be regarded as the island's national championships.
"This tournament is a highly regarded event across the Caribbean and wider afield ... entries are still coming in at this stage but we expect good participation for the Sagicor Barbados Open," said BGA President Trevor Tasker.
Tasker and Mark Blakeley, Sagicor's Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development, spoke at a media conference last week to launch the 2016 Barbados Open where both said they were looking forward to an exciting event.
Blakeley said Sagicor was proud to support the Open Championships and this year’s event was coming at a time when Sagicor was celebrating the most significant milestone of 175 years of dedicated service to communities and people across the Caribbean.
“Our Group continues its work to enhance the lives of people within the communities we serve, and this partnership is just one of many initiatives we align ourselves with regionally to benefit the many constituents we serve,” he said.
Blakeley further disclosed that Sagicor was no stranger to Golf and in 2001, through their Legacy company The Barbados Mutual, they had sponsored the Mutual Bank Open tournament in partnership with the Barbados Golf Club.
“More recently over the past 4 years, we have sponsored the Sagicor General Family Golf championships and in Trinidad, we also sponsor a major youth tournament and also make countless donations to other organisations using golf as a means to raise monies for charity,” he added.
Tasker said this year's event marks the 33rd edition of the Barbados Open and the Association was extremely delighted to have Sagicor on board as title sponsor.
“Sagicor's partnership with the BGA affords us the opportunity to continue to grow the sport of golf in Barbados . Tournaments like the Sagicor Barbados Open also allow our best players to compete at the highest level and to build confidence,” said Tasker.
He added that the values of golf were aligned to those of Sagicor and emphasised integrity, discipline, responsibility and honesty.
Players will contest the 2016 Sagicor Barbados Open in six divisions and while other catergories will play at the Barbados Golf Club, on Friday August 26, and Apes Hill , on Saturday August 27, - top golfers in the championship flight (0-9 handicaps) and Seniors will play their three days of competition, over 54-holes, at Royal Westmoreland.
All players, in all divisions, will then contest the final 18 holes of the Sagicor Barbados Open at Apes Hill on Sunday August 28 where a major awards ceremony will follow play on the greens and fairways.
