National junior player Joshua Jones and coach Jaleel Marshall are celebrating as champions of the Barbados Golf Association's 2015 Challenge Cup.
The winners produced a combined net score of 59 on Saturday to grab the Cup during an exciting tournament, which was supported by ICBL, at the Barbados Golf Club, at Durants, Christ Church.
The Jones and Marshall combination repelled all comers with some highly competitive play on a good day for golf as they registered five birdies and an eagle (on No.12) , enroute to victory.
Close to 100 players contested the two-ball/ better-ball event which also saw the second and third-placed teams locked on net scores of 60. Orlando Crichlow and Earlyn Shuffler secured second place with a better performance over the last nine holes, as they edged the fast improving David Degg and Shawn Kinch on the count-back system.
Fourth were lawyer Tony Reece and retired banker Horace Cobham with a net 62 strokes.
Several prizes that tested the skills of golfers were also up for grabs and Barbados players, Simon Proverbs and Lynn DeCambra-Mcleod , took prizes for the longest drives of the day.
Proverbs struck his tee-shot close to 300 yards, into wind on the eleventh hole, while DeCambra-Mcleod took the women's prize on hole No.17.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes were won by teenager Mavi Vergos (women) and Patrick McKeown, who took the prize in the men's division as he landed his tee-shot within four feet of the hole on No.16 , a par-3 which forces players to hit from west to east over water .
During a presentation ceremony at the BGC club-house, BGA President Cally Boyea thanked all players for making the Challenge Cup a success and sponsors ICBL , Cin Cin Restaurant, Banks, and LIME for their support.
Boyea also praised the management and staff of the Barbados Golf Club for hosting the Challenge Cup and disclosed that the next tournament will be the BGA Trophy, a strokeplay event in May .
