Gaskin, Clarke win New Year Hamper golf
Photographer Alric Gaskin set aside his camera to team up with Donald Clarke and win the third Barbados Golf Association New Year Hamper tournament.
Competing in the popular Scramble format Gaskin and Clarke snatched victory on the countback from Paul Fanning and Bissessar Chakalall with a Nett 50 score at Rockley Saturday.
Fanning and Chakalall also had a Nett 50.
The husband and wife pair of Janet and John Crosthwaite were third with a Nett 51 while Hoerman Cup representative Carlsen Leacock and Livy Webster also played well for a Nett 51.5 and fourth place.
Fifty teams enjoyed the ideal weather conditions and traditional Rockley camaraderie in the association’s 2008 season opener which was as competitive as any Scramble could be.
Ten teams carried off hampers in the fun-filled event as the BGA gets down to organising a new season with the Rockley Cup in March the next event.
Gaskin and Clarke were a very late entry as Gaskin’s original partner was unavailable. Clarke is an occasional visitor to the island.
It was an excellent opportunity for mixed teams of low and high handicap players and the entries showed a serious effort by competitors to find the right combination for winner’s row.
The two-ball scramble is played with each team deciding on the best drive and hitting from the best spot thereafter. The average of the team’s handicap is then subtracted from the final tally, making the Scramble a fun-filled, competitive event. |
