Bajans in commendable golf showing
By Hallam Hope
Barbados finished winners in the Seniors division and third in the Hoerman Cup and Mid Amateurs championship at the 53rd Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Ricky Skeete and Robert Piggott closed the four-day tournament with a 72 and overall tally of 288 strokes, which gave Barbados the title by six strokes from the second-placed Federico Valverde and Hector Then of the Dominican Republic. The former Barbados cricketer, Skeete and evergreen golfer Piggott dominated the four days with scores of 71, 71, 74 and 72.
James Johnson and a much-improved teenager Simon Proverbs led the way for the Bajans in the Hoerman Cup while Judd Cozier and Thomas Harris fought back from fifth place to be a commendable third in the Mid Amateurs. Cozier and Harris, playing together in the Caribbean’s leading amateur competition for the first time, had scores of 74, 72, 73 and 71 in what were described as very trying conditions. Barbados won the Mid-Amateurs title last year.
The big scores in the various categories at times reflected very windy conditions, the tight nature of the course which demanded careful club selection, some tough pin positions and extremely fast greens. Even the home team struggled and below par scores such as Simon Proverbs’ 70 on the third day were a rarity.
Proverbs, 16, had an excellent tournament and was second to Johnson in overall performance with scores of 82, 81, 70 and 74. Johnson’s scores were 75, 73, 74 and 72.
Sean Edey and Marcus Clarke supported the team in the trying conditions.
Edey shot 77 on the first two days while Clarke’s best score was 75 on the second day.
The Super Seniors team of Birchmore Griffith and Richie Alleyne improved as the tournament continued with a best combination of 75 Saturday, but was not in contention.
