Bajans lead in Seniors golf

On a day of some brutal scores across the board Barbados ended the first round of the Hoerman Cup golf championship in fourth place Wednesday, 14 shots off the lead in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
James Johnson (75) and Sean Edey (77) led the way, while Marcus Clarke returned a score of 79, Simon Proverbs 82 and Scot Foster 88.
The only bright spot for the Barbados team was in the Seniors division where Ricky Skeete, the former Barbados cricketer and evergreen Robert Piggott combined excellently to lead the competition with 71, three strokes better than the Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic and Jamaica, who share second spot on 74.
The Mid-Amateurs team of Judd Cozier and Thomas Harris were in the middle of the nine-team pack after combining for 74. They are defending the title which Charles Edey and Billy Tempro won last year.
The Provo golf course has been a challenge for virtually every player, with Puerto Rico leading in the Hoerman Cup with 299, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) second with 309 and Jamaica third on 310. The best four individual scores are used to determine the team tally in the four-day championship.
Barbados are seeking their first Hoerman Cup win since the 2004 feat in the Bahamas.
In the Super Seniors category Birchmore Griffith and Richie Alleyne found the going tough in a team effort of 81.
