Antiguan James makes golf challenge

By Hallam Hope

Antiguan teenager Omari James is making a serious bid as the 26th Beacon Insurance Barbados Open enters its final day at Royal Westmoreland Sunday.
James leads by one stroke overall going into the final day after a superb round of 69 Saturday.

Johnson was undone by three bogies on the second day in his 71, which included five birdies. For James, who won the Antigua Open two weeks ago, a solidary bogie on the last hole was the lone blemish in a round that included five birdies, the one bogie and 12 pars.

James shot 31 and 38, while Johnson's scores were 32 and 39.
American Andrew Marler went into decline after drawing level with Johnson on the first day. His 79 virtually puts him out of contention.

The scene is therefore set for an exciting climax in which the experience of Johnson, who is looking for his fourth title in a row and eighth overall, comes up against the teenage talent of an Antiguan aiming to make it back to back Open victories.

Sean Edey finished even par Saturday to be third overall with 143 strokes, a mere one behind his Barbados Hoerman Cup captain Johnson.

Ricky Skeete extended his lead in the Men's Seniors flight with a one over par for 147 on the two days. His partner Robert Piggott's 75 was an improvement on the first day's 78 and he is currently second with an overall 153.

Terry Hanton lies in third place after a 75 Saturday carried him to 154 overall.
