Day 1 report: The 2016 Sagicor Barbados Open Golf Championships
The top players in the 2016 Sagicor Barbados Open Golf Championships will be seeking to position themselves on Saturday for a run at the title after heavy rains forced play to be abandoned on Friday at Royal Westmoreland.
Executives of the Barbados Golf Association (BGA) , organisers of the tournament, said players in the men's and women's championship flights, as well as the seniors, will now contest a two-day /36-hole event on Saturday and Sunday at Royal Westmoreland.
Most players , including major contenders James Johnson, Carlsen Leacock, Julian Jordan and Jamaican Ian Facey, were unable to complete nine holes of the tournament and hence scores during limited play on the first day will not be considered.
“The elements are beyond our control but we are hoping for good weather over the next two days … competition should be very keen and exciting over 36 holes,” said BGA President, Trevor Tasker.
Sunshine at the Barbados Golf Club
Over at the Barbados Golf Club, defending champion Malcolm Hunte made use of bright sunshine at the Durants course, in Christ Church, and kept himself among the front-runners in the men's first flight which features players with 10-18 handicaps.
Hunte (gross 85) was two shots behind Michael Foster , who posted the day's best gross score of 83 , while Sunil Chatrani and Dimitrios Vamvakas also shot 85.
National junior player Oaziah Layne posted 86, including a day's best 40 over the first nine holes, while another national junior player, Eryn Blakeley (33) leads Zerina Belgrave (31) by two Stableford points in the women's first flight competition.
Among the super-seniors (over 60 years) , Richie Alleyne leads the field with a gross 81, ahead of Trinidadians Mani Bhimull (82) and Aroon Narraynsingh (88).
Bert Coppin and Tom O'Sullivan were joint leaders in the men's second flight with 40 Stableford points each.
Play in the men's first and second flights , as well as the Super-Seniors, will continue on Saturday at the Apes Hill Club, where they will also play their final 18 holes on Sunday.
